Snowed In Day 2

 Snowed In Day 2

We survived the night all in one room!!! I don't think I got even one solid hour of sleep. We still had rolling black outs, one hour on to one hour off. Every time the electricity would come on the alarm panel would beep and I would have to get up and put the code in 3 different time for it to stop beeping.

Thankfully, I had my energize to help get me up and going. At some point in the morning I got all the bedding picked up and was also able to get my workout downloaded to my iPad so I could workout even if the electricity was out.

Since last night was the coldest night, most of the snow was not frozen. I am pretty sure the kids are over it now. They were not even excited to go out and play in it till the afternoon. We spent most of the day playing games and trying to keep busy to help pass the time.

In the evening we would turn on the generator so we could have lights downstairs and the little heaters on in our room when the electricity would go out. At some point in the evening, post started to pop up about the city starting to have water issues and to fill tubs and pot up with water to have to drink and flush potties. So we filled both tubs and what ever jugs we could find with water. We then settled in for a game of uno in our room, since the kids would be camping out another night in there.

I have to say all our camping and scouting skills are sure coming in handy through this.

Snowed In

Snowed In Day 1

We woke up Monday morning to a very unusual site outside. SNOW!!! And not just a little, but 4 to 5 inches of it!! Thankfully the kids already had the day off from school. We spent the day playing in the snow and hanging out trying to stay warm.

But let’s back up a few days and preface what is about to come.

The past few days leading up to the snow had been very cold. From the Friday before till today we have not gotten above 30 degrees and have been in the 20’s and teens at night. For us Texans, this is not normal and we have been so cold. Even our heater was starting to have a hard time keeping the house warm.

Around midnight on Sunday night our smoke detectors started going off. We couldn’t figure out what was causing it and then they stopped. Chris and I went back to bed only to have them go back off  again 2 hours later. We thought we found the culprit smoke detector and took it down. But even taking it down it still kept going, so we had to remove the battery. We went back to bed only to have them go off again an hour later. So Chris took down the rest of them and removed the batteries. By this point Zachary had been woken up and was in our bed and Rowdy didn’t like the high pitch noise and it took a bit to get him calmed down. It had already been snowing for a few hours too.

Also at that time I got on Facebook to see if the neighbors were having issues with their smoke detectors only to see that the ECROT had issued a level 3 emergency, which meant because of the temperatures outside and the use of so much power to heat homes, we were going on rolling blackouts. Never in my life have I ever been on forced blackouts. Electricity going out yes, but never a controlled blackout.

So at 2:58 am we lost electricity and it has been consistently coming on every hour for an hour and then going back off.

Here’s the part where I have to eat crow. Chris is a pack rat and is always collecting things or has things that I feel like just take up space and we will never use. Well I was wrong and am so thankful for these things today. We had portable propane heaters, that I didn’t even know we had to help heat the house today and we also used our camping stove to cook on. Then in the afternoon to prepare for tonight he went to get the generators from the shop so we didn’t have to live in the dark come 6 o’clock.

Also tonight is suppose to be in the single digits, so we have everyone sleeping in our room on air mattresses. Please pray that we all get some sleep tonight and don’t freeze.

Master Bedroom Makeover

Finally after being in our new house for 1 1/2 years it was time to make our room what we wanted. It has taken us a while to decide on colors that we liked. I really wanted to make our room somewhere we could escaped to relax from the crazy busy days of taking care of 4 kids.

Our nieces and nephew were here staying the weekend, so we had someone to entertain all the kids while Chris and I painted and moved furniture around.

It was a long day of painting, but I am so happy with the way it all turned out. Now we just need to get some curtains and do a little decorating.
